Student Aide Help Guide: Holds

Need-to-know procedures and other information

The Basics

Holds are library-owned books that can be requested through the catalog, pulled by staff, and held behind the circulation desk. Holds are interfiled with the ILLs, alphabetically by last name.

How to Request a Hold

Placing a request through the catalog

Although we are not able to place request for patrons through their catalog accounts, it is good to know how it is done so you can walk a patron through the process.

1. The patron is going to need to sign into their UMW account before they can do anything. The sign in link is located at the top right of the screen, just below “Ask a librarian”.

2. Once the patron is signed in, have them find the item they are looking for. They then need to click on “Get it”. This will open a menu with the book information. They then need to click on “Request”

3. The following screen will populate: ‚Äč

4. Using the drop down menus, set “Terms of Use” to 35 days and “Pickup Location” to the location of their choice. The patron them needs to hit “Request.”

5. A notification will then popup that the Request has been placed.
