Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service that provides access to books, journal articles, dissertations, and other materials that are not owned by the UMW Libraries. If you have a citation for an item that the UMW Libraries do not own, you may make a request to borrow it. The ILL office will locate a lending library.
Most ILL items come from libraries in Virginia or nearby states, but the UMW Libraries can get an item from anywhere in the world, as long as there's a library that's willing to lend the item.
Who may request an ILL?
ILL requests may be submitted by any current student, faculty, or staff member of UMW. Guest patrons, secondary card holders, students auditing a class, and people not affiliated with UMW are not eligible for this service.
How do I request an ILL?
The librarians can help you place ILL requests. If you'd like help, contact the Reference desk.
What does an ILL cost?
There is no cost for ILL requests.
How many ILLs may I request?
Students are limited to 20 active requests at a time.
How long does it take?
Allow 1 – 2 weeks for most requests to be processed and received. Some requests may take longer.
How will I know when my ILL arrives?
You will be notified via your UMW email account when your ILL materials have arrived.
Who do I talk to if I have questions about my ILL account?
