Juvenile/Young Adult Literature: Books

Books in UMW Libraries

The UMW Libraries Catalog will help you to locate books about education and about children's literature. It will also help you find classic and award-winning books for children.  Use the "Location" option in a catalog search (located in the left-hand column) to narrow to Simpson Library's Juvenile / Young Adult Collections.

To browse UMW's libraries' shelves for children's fiction, visit the Juvenile / Young Adult collection on the first floor of Simpson Library, behind the main stairs. Most children's literature falls between call numbers PZ 5 and PZ 90.

Books about Children's Literature

To find books about children's literature, search for any of the following terms in the Library Catalog as a Subject:

  • Children's literature - History and criticism
  • Children's literature - Study and teaching
  • Children's poetry
  • Children's stories
  • Fairy Tales
  • Folklore
  • Picture books for children
  • Tales

Books by/about a Specific Author

To find children's books by a specific author, perform a Browse Search in the library's catalog using the author's name in this format: last name, comma, first name. "AUTHOR" should already be selected in the drop-down menu.

  • Carle, Eric
  • Milne, A.A.
  • Rowling, J.K.
  • Rylant, Cynthia
  • Seuss, Dr.

Use the same type of search to locate books illustrated by a particular artist:

  • Aliki
  • Mathers, Petra
  • Nelson, Kadir
  • Pinkney, Jerry
  • Shepard, Ernest H.

To find books about a particular author or about an author’s work, use the same format to enter the author's name in a basic search, but change "Author" to "Subject " in the drop-down menu.
